It all began one day when I was standing behind the counter of My paintball store in Erie,PA. A 15 year old customer of mine came into purchase some paint and perhaps a new gun. As he looked at guns we started to talk about how he's was saving money and if he could only sell this rusted piece of junk that was sitting in his driveway. Well, I had to ask. "What kind of car was it ?" It was a mustang and his dad wanted to fix it up for him. At the time I wasn't into 71's, I already had a 67 that I was already working on and I had some engine backlog work that needed to be finished for customers. Well the kid left and I thought no more of it, at least until next time he came in. He wanted to trade the car for a gun and some money. Hmm...I thought..... Na, I got to much going now and I'm not to into 71's like I stated earlier. But curiosity got the best of me and I asked, "what's it got in it?" "Some big 4000 engine" the kid replies. "4000 ??? do you mean 429 ?" I asked. Ya something like that. Well, he started to get my attention so that night I did what any uninterested person would do and hit the internet. 9 hours later I had read enough info about the 71 to realize this kid may have something. So I called him the next day and told him to run outside and read me that vin number. Well it was like hitting the lottery! So off to the accountant (wife) to see if the funding was there. As soon as I walked in the door, she could tell by the look on my face we were buying a car. We picked up the car the next day. It's been 4 years now and it's almost ready to be sold. It's going to be a sad day but as the paintball business is not doing as well as we hoped by this time the bills will have to be paid, so the car will go.......... Perhaps I should go into restoration, after all, the last three vehicles (two mustangs and a Duce and a Half) I've restored, have all been sold to help the paintball business survive. .....
Update
The car is back from the paint shop and it looks awesome. The final stripes get put on after the doors are loaded with the windows and latch hardware. It will also get it's final buffing for that extreme deep gloss black shine. It looks good now, can't wait to see it after that!
Update 12/01/07
Winter has come quickly here in Erie, PA and another year has passed since the original completion date now two years ago. The engine has passed it's 2 hour test stand run with flying colors. One small carb leak, easy fix. Although we believe the dual carbs won't fit under the stock Ram Air hood it still looks awesome the way it is. We have the original SCJ intake so it's not a worry. A lot of the car has original parts but there are also many new parts. We will put it on the dyno and post the results.
Update 01/05/08
The engine is in and the dual quads FIT Under the hood!!!!!!
We'll be custom designing an air cleaner for it so the Ram Air can still be used.
